Spirit, Soul and Body

How were we made?

Genesis 1:26-27 [NKJV], Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

The Godhead is made up of:

1.  God the Father

2.  God the Son

3.  God the Holy Spirit

Acts 10:38 [NKJV], how God [the Father] anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

Matthew 28:19 [NASB], “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”

If God is a three part being, “What does that mean for us?”

1 Thessalonians 5:23 [TEV], May the God who gives us peace make you holy in every way and keep your WHOLE BEING—spirit, soul, and body—free from every fault at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

“We are a spirit, we possess a soul, and we live in a physical body.”

Brief description of our entire being…

Body—we make contact with the natural world around us through our five senses, which are;

our ability to “see, hear, smell, taste and touch.”  This is also the part of our being that

            houses our soul and spirit.

Soul—this is where our personality is located.  This is also the part of our being that contains

our “intellect [mind], will and emotions” or “thoughts, desires and feelings.”

Spirit—this is the very life source of our being.

Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit…”

Genesis 2:7 [AMP], Then the Lord God formed [that is, created the body of] man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath or spirit of life, and man became a living being [an individual complete in body and spirit].

Job 33:4 [NIV], “The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”

Ephesians 2:1-3 [NIV], As for you, you were [spiritually] dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts [soul/flesh].

John 4:24, “God is Spirit…”

Ephesians 2:4-5 [NLT], But God is so rich in mercy, and He loved us so much, 5 that even though we were [spiritually] dead because of our sins, He gave us [spiritual] life when He raised Christ from the dead.  (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)

John 20:19-22 [NLT], That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.  Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them!  “Peace be with you,” He said. 20 As He spoke, He showed them the wounds in His hands and His side.  They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord! 21 Again He said, “Peace be with you.  As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” 22 Then He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

John 3:1-8 [NLT], There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee. 2 After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus.  “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent You to teach us.  Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with You.” 3 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again [AMP:  reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified], you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” 4 “What do You mean?” Exclaimed Nicodemus.  “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?” 5 Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. 6 Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. 7 So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it wants.  Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it come from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”
