Foundation: Building Blocks of the Faith Pt 1

1 Corinthians 3:9 (NKJV) …you are God’s building.

Hebrews 6:1-2 (NKJV) Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

The Doctrines of Christ:

1.  Repentance from dead works

2.  Faith toward God

3.  Baptisms

4.  Laying on of hands

5.  Resurrection of the dead

6.  Eternal Judgment

Repentance was preached by…

  • The prophets  (Jon. 3)

  • John the Baptist  (Mt. 3)

  • Jesus  (Mt. 4)

  • The disciples  (Mk. 6)

  • Peter  (Acts 2)

  • Paul  (Acts 20)

  • Jesus  (Rev. 2-3)

“The chief dangers which confront the present Century are, religion without the Holy Spirit, Christianity without Christ, forgiveness without repentance, salvation without regeneration, politics without God, and Heaven without Hell.”  —William Booth

Luke 13:3 (ESV) I tell you…unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

2 Peter 3:9 (NIV) The Lord is not slow in keeping His promises, as some understand slowness.  Instead He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Acts 17:30 (NIV) In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now He commands all people everywhere to repent.

Repentance is not the following…

1.  It is not conviction of sin.

2.  It is not the “turning over a new leaf.”

3.  It is not saying “sorry” because we have to.

4.  It is not saying “sorry” after we’ve been busted.

5.  It is not saying “sorry, BUT…”

6.  It is not telling ourselves, “I can ask for forgiveness later.”

"Repentance is an inner change of mind (heart) that results in an outward turning around; causing a person to face and move in a completely new direction.  Therefore, it encompasses a change of thinking, heart, attitude, values, direction and purpose."

Matthew 4:17, "Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Repentance is marked by…

  • Godly sorrow

  • Confession

  • Asking for forgiveness

  • Forsaking

  • Hating

  • Restitution

  • Gratitude

Luke 19:1-10 (NIV) Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. 5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately.  I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. 7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” 8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord!  Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

1.  Because we’ve learned to compare our sins.

“Most people see sin everywhere but in the mirror!”

2.  Because we tend to categorize sin

“You do the simple thing; God will do the complicated thing.  You do the small thing; God will do the great thing.  You do the possible thing; God will do the impossible thing.”
