A Heart That Gives: Part 2

1 Timothy 6:17-19 (NIV) Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

1.  God is the owner of all things (Ps. 24:1)

2.  We don’t own anything (1 Cor. 4:7)

3.  We are called to stewardship (Mt. 25:14-30)

4.  We will be held accountable (Rom. 14:12)

What would happen IF we began to look at our money through God’s eyes?

Mark 10:17-22 (NLT) As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked.  “Only God is truly good. 19 But to answer your question, you know the commandments:  ‘You must not murder.  You must not commit adultery.  You must not steal.  You must not testify falsely.  You must not cheat anyone.  Honor your father and mother.’” 20 “Teacher,” the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.” 21 Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him.  “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.  Then come, follow me.” 22 At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV) “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 6:24 (NKJV) “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be loyal [devoted] to the one and despise the other.  You cannot serve God and mammon.

Mammon“the false god of riches and greed.”

How can we know if we’re under the influence of the spirit of Mammon?

“Mammon promises us those things that only God can give — security, significance, identity, independence, power, and freedom.  Mammon tells us it can insulate us from life’s problems and that money is the answer to every situation.”  —Jimmy Evans

  • The spirit of mammon tries to replace God’s Spirit in our lives.  To lure us in, it promises us peace, joy, rest, and fulfillment…but we need to remember ONLY God can truly give us those things.

Acts 2:44-47 (NLT) And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity — 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people.

Matthew 6:25-33 (NLT) “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear.  Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?  26 Look at the birds.  They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them.  And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? 27 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? 28 And why worry about your clothing?  Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow.  They don’t work or make their clothing, 29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. 30 And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you.  Why do you have so little faith? 31 So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat?  What will we drink?  What will we wear?’ 32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. 33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”
