Righteousness: The Proof

Romans 10:9-13 (NLT) If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. 11 As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in Him will never be disgraced.” …13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

James 2:14-20 (NLT) What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions?  Can that kind of faith save anyone? …17 So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough.  Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. 18 Now some may argue, “Some people have faith; others have good deeds.”  But I say, “How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds?  I will show you my faith by my good deeds.” 19 You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God.  Good for you!  Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. 20 How foolish!  Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?

  • The “gift of righteousness” should always be accompanied by a “proof of righteousness.”

Luke 19:1-10 (NLT) Jesus entered Jericho and made His way through the town. 2 There was a man there named Zacchaeus.  He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. 3 He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way. 5 When Jesus came by, He looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name.  “Zacchaeus!” he said.  “Quick, come down!  I must be a guest in your home today.”6 Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. 7 But the people were displeased.  “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled. 8 Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!” 9 Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”

Ezekiel 36:25-27 (NIV) I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean [blood]; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put My Spirit in you and move you to follow My decrees and be careful to keep My laws.

  • Becoming a follower of Christ begins and ends with a transformed life

  • It doesn’t take a lengthy amount of time to become a righteous person.

2 Peter 1:1-4 (NLT) This letter is from Simon Peter… I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have.  This faith was given to you because of the justice and fairness of Jesus Christ, our God and Savior.  …3 By His divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life.  We have received all of this by coming to know Him, the one who called us to Himself… 4 And because of His glory and excellence, He has given us great and precious promises.  These are the promises that enable you to share His divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

  • He freely deposits His divine nature into our hearts.

  • We still have a responsibility to take off the old man and to put on the new man in Christ.

Titus 2:11-12 (NLT) For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. 12 And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures.  We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God.

“God expects us to live according to the divine nature that He has deposited on the inside of us.”

Ephesians 4:17-32 (NLT) With the Lord’s authority I say this:  Live no longer as the Gentiles do, for they are hopelessly confused. 18 Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against Him. 19 They have no sense of shame.  They live for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice every kind of impurity. 20 But that isn’t what you learned about Christ. 21 Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from Him, 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. 24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. 25 So stop telling lies.  Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. 26 And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.”  Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 for anger gives a foothold to the devil. 28 If you are a thief, quit stealing.  Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need. 29 Don’t use foul or abusive language.  Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. 30 And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live.  Remember, He has identified you as His own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.  Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

Ephesians 5:1-9 (NLT) Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are His dear children. 2 Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ.  He loved us and offered Himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God. 3 Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you.  Such sins have no place among God’s people. 4 Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you.  Instead, let there be thankfulness to God. 5 You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God.  For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. 6 Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey Him. 7 Don’t participate in the things these people do. 8 For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord.  So live as people of light! 9 For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true [righteous living].

Three Proofs of Righteousness:

1.  A desire to be holy

1 Corinthians 15:34 (KJV) Awake to righteousness, and do not sin.

1 John 3:9 (NLT) Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning, because God’s life is in them.  So they can’t keep sinning, because they are children of God.

“A lifestyle of sin becomes out of character for the person who has a new nature in Christ, because God’s nature is one of holiness.”

2.  A desire to walk in the truth

“A lifestyle of lies becomes out of character for the person who has a new nature in Christ, because God’s nature is one of truth.”

3.  A desire to express love

1 John 3:14 (NLT) If we love our brothers and sisters who are believers, it proves that we have passed from death to life.  But a person who has no love is still dead.

“A lifestyle that lacks love becomes out of character for the person who has a new nature in Christ, because God’s nature is one of love.”

John 13:34-35 (NLT) So now I am giving you a new commandment:  Love each other.  Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. 35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are My disciples.

Philippians 1:11 (NASB) …filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ…
