His Name Shall Be Called
The Books of the Law — Gen. to Deut.
The Historical Books — Josh. to Esth.
The Poetic Books — Job to Song
The Prophetic Books — Isa. to Mal.
Isaiah 9:1-3 (NIV) Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past He humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future He will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan — 2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. 3 You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before You as people rejoice at the harvest, as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder.
How would He give them hope?
Isaiah 9:6 (NIV) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
God chose a NAME that would reveal His Son’s identity, attributes, character, and purpose to us.
1. Jesus is our Wonderful Counselor
Wonderful — “extraordinary, incomprehensible, exceptional, marvelous, surpassing human thought.”
Counselor — “an advisor, guide, or planner who formulates a plan of action.”
Isaiah 11:2 (NLT) And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him — the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
Psalm 32:8 (NIV) I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My loving eye on you.
Isaiah 28:29 (NKJV) This also comes from the Lord of hosts, Who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in guidance.
James 1:5 (NLT) If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.
2. Jesus is our Mighty God
Mighty — “strength, power, valiant, brave, champion, hero.”
Psalms 24:8-10 (NLT) Who is the King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty; the Lord, invincible in battle. 9 Open up, ancient gates! Open up, ancient doors, and let the King of glory enter. 10 Who is the King of glory? The Lord of Heaven’s Armies — He is the King of glory.
Revelation 19:11-16 (NIV) I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice He judges and wages war. 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on His head are many crowns. He has a name written on Him that no one knows but He Himself. 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and His name is the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven were following Him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 Coming out of His mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On His robe and on His thigh He has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
3. Jesus is our Everlasting Father
John 1:18 (NKJV) No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.
Matthew 11:27 (NLT) My Father has entrusted everything to Me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.
John 14:9 (NLT) Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father!
1 John 3:1 (NIV) See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
4. Jesus is our Prince of Peace
Peace — “safety, wellness, happiness, friendship, absence of strife, prosperity, and peace.”
