Intercession: Standing Between Heaven and Earth

“An intercessor is someone who stands between heaven and earth to ask God for a breakthrough on behalf of another.”

Biblical examples of intercession…

-Abraham pleaded for Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen. 18)

-Aaron ran into the crowd to stop a plague (Num. 16)

-Priests presented sin offerings (Lev. 14)

-Esther saved her people from genocide (Esth. 8)

-Moses and the Golden Calf (Ex. 32)

Psalm 106:23 (AMPC) Therefore He said He would destroy them.  [And He would have done so] had not Moses, His chosen one, stepped into the breach before Him to turn away His threatening wrath.

James 5:16 (NLT) The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

Matthew 6:9-13 (AMP) “Pray, then, in this way:  ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. 10 Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven our debtors. 13 And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.]’”

1.  Your name

John 16:23-24 (ESV) In that day you will ask nothing of me.  Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name.  Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

2.  Your kingdom

  • God’s kingdom is His way of doing things.

Ezekiel 22:30 (NLT) “I looked for someone who might rebuild the wall of righteousness that guards the land.  I searched for someone to stand in the gap.

“Intercessory prayer is spiritual defiance of what is in the way of what God has promised.”  —Walter Wink

3.  Your will

Ezekiel 22:30-31 (NLT) “I looked for someone who might rebuild the wall of righteousness that guards the land. I searched for someone to stand in the gap in the wall so I wouldn’t have to destroy the land, but I found no one. 31 So now I will pour out my fury on them, consuming them with the fire of my anger. I will heap on their heads the full penalty for all their sins. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!”

Nehemiah 4:13-14 (NLT) So I placed armed guards behind the lowest parts of the wall in the exposed areas.  I stationed the people to stand guard by families, armed with swords, spears, and bows. 14 Then as I looked over the situation, I called together the nobles and the rest of the people and said to them, “Don’t be afraid of the enemy!  Remember the Lord, who is great and glorious, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes!”
