Matthew 22:37-40 (NLT) “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”
What if the pace we’re living at is not the pace God intended?
God has given us an antidote to our busyness and exhaustion—it’s called REST.
Mark 6:31 (TPT) There was such a swirl of activity around Jesus, with so many people coming and going, that they were unable to even eat a meal. So Jesus said to His disciples, “Come, let’s take a break and find a secluded place where you can rest a while.”
Genesis 1:1-3 (NLT) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. 3 Then God said…
Genesis 2:1-3 (NLT) So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed. 2 On the seventh day God had finished His work of creation, so He rested from all His work. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when He rested from all His work of creation.
Sabbath — “to stop and rest from labor.”
Exodus 20:8-11 (NLT) “Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 You have six days each week for your ordinary work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day He rested. That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
The problem is that many of us view work as important and rest as optional.
Mark 2:27 (NLT) “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.”
The Sabbath helps us evaluate our priorities.
The Sabbath helps us remember whose we are.
What are we finding our identity in?
1 John 3:1 (NIV) See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is who we are!
The Sabbath helps us remember our limitations.
“It takes the same amount of faith to rest as it does to tithe.” —Walter Madison
So what does this look like in real life?
Pick a day
Relax
Take time to connect with God
