Ten Conversations: How To Keep God First

  • You must not have any other god but Me

  • You must not make for yourself an idol

  • You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God

  • Remember to observe the Sabbath

  • Honor your father and mother

  • You must not murder

  • You must not commit adultery

  • You must not steal

  • You must not lie

  • You must not covet

Exodus 20:1-3 (NIV) And God spoke all these words: 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 3 You shall have no other gods before me.”

Exodus 20:2 (NIV) “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 

Matthew 22:37-38 (NLT) “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment.”  

Psalm 100:3 (AMP) Know and fully recognize with gratitude that the Lord Himself is God; it is He who has made us, not we ourselves [and we are His].  We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. 

Is God first in my finances?

Deuteronomy 8:11-14 (NLT) But that is the time to be careful!  Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the Lord your God and disobey His commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today. 12 For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in, 13 and when your flocks and herds have become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied along with everything else, be careful! 14 Do not become proud at that time and forget the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt. 

Proverbs 3:9-10 (NIV) Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.  

Matthew 6:21 (NIV) For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 

Is God first in my interests?

Matthew 6:33 “Seek first the kingdom of God…” 

Is God first in my relationships?

Luke 14:26-27 (NLT) If you want to be My disciples, you must, by comparison, hate everyone else—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life.  Otherwise, you cannot be My disciple.  

Psalm 73:25 (NLT) Whom have I in heaven but You?  I desire You more than anything on earth. 

Is God first in my schedule?

  • Say thank you 

  • Read my Bible 

  • Confess my mess 

  • Bring my needs and concerns to Him

Is God first in my troubles?

John 16:33 (NLT) I have told you all this so that you may have peace in Me.  Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows.  But take heart, because I have overcome the world.  

“When you discover that you have nothing left but God, you will discover that God is enough.”
