Why Did Jesus Die?

Why did Jesus die?

“Jesus died to save us from our sins.”

1 Peter 3:18 (AMP) For indeed Christ died for sins once for all, the Just and Righteous for the unjust and unrighteous [the Innocent for the guilty] so that He might bring us to God…

Ephesians 2:13 (NLT) But now you have been united with Christ Jesus.  Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to Him through the blood of Christ.

Hebrews 9:22 (NLT) For without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.

Colossians 1:13-14 (NLT) For He has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of His dear Son, 14 who purchased our freedom [with His blood] and forgave our sins.

Acts 26:18 (NLT). “To open their eyes, so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God.  Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God’s people, who are set apart [saved] by faith…”

  • By His death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus accomplished what was impossible with man. As our substitute, He made us right with God.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (NLT) For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

“I’m convinced God isn’t as interested in our sin as some of us might think.” —David Ravenhill

Why did Jesus die?

Romans 14:7-9 (NLT) For we don’t live for ourselves or die for ourselves. 8 If we live, it’s to honor the Lord. And if we die, it’s to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9 Christ died and rose again for this very purpose—to be Lord both of the living and of the dead…

  • Jesus’ death was not merely for our sin, but so that He could establish His Lordship over our lives.

Titus 2:14 (AMP) Who [willingly] gave Himself [to be crucified] on our behalf to redeem us and purchase our freedom from all wickedness, and to purify for Himself a chosen and very special people to be His own possession, who are enthusiastic for doing what is good.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (AMP) Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is within you, whom you have [received as a gift] from God, and that you are not your own [property]? 20 You were bought with a price [you were actually purchased with the precious blood of Jesus and made His own]. So then honor and glorify God with your body.

2 Corinthians 5:15 (NLT) He died for everyone so that those who receive His new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.

“You’ve got to get out of the car, take the keys around, open up the trunk lid, hand the keys to the Lord Jesus, get inside the trunk, slam the lid down, whisper through the keyhole, ‘Lord look, fill’r up with anything You want and You drive, it’s up to You from now on.”  —Paris Reidhead

  • Every person has a cross and a throne in their heart.

Luke 9:23 (NKJV) “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.

  • At its core, Lordship means ownership, not a partnership.

  • Making Jesus “Lord” of our lives means that He has the first and last word in all things pertaining to our life. It means we are called to walk with Him, please Him, and do what He wants, when He wants it, and in the way He wants it done.

  • “Easy believism” says, it it is plausible for a person to accept Jesus as their Savior without yielding to Him as their Lord.

John 6:66-68 (NKJV) From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. 67 Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” 68 But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life.”

How many Christians today eagerly accept His forgiveness, but refuse to receive His lordship?

God is eagerly looking for those who…

  • Forsake all to follow Him…wherever He leads.

  • Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness

  • Delight in doing His will, more than their own.

  • Accept forgiveness, but passionately enlist in His purpose.

  • “Well done, thy good and faithful servant.”

Philippians 2:9-11 (NKJV) Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ IS Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Jesus is already Lord, if we want to acknowledge it or not. So why would we ever want to make the mistake of allowing Him to not have His rightful place over our lives.
