PROMISES, Part 3–Find Freedom

1 Corinthians 11:23-26 // "For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you:  that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread: 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me." 25 In the same manner, He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood.  This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes."

Exodus 6:6-7 // "I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.  I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. 7  I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God.  Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians."

God promises us...

  • Salvation
  • Freedom
  • Restoration
  • Fulfillment

What's the difference between salvation and freedom?

Ephesians 2:8-9 [NLT] // "God saved you by his grace when you believed.  And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it."

Salvation happens in an instant, while Freedom is a process.

"Freedom is about closing the doors of our yesterdays."

Galatians 4:5-7 // "...that we might receive the adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!" 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ."

Romans 8:14-17 // "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs..."

1.  Victory over sin

Sin - "the choices we make"

Romans 7:15 [NLT] // "I don't really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don't do it.  Instead, I do what I hate."

Romans 7:19 [NLT] // "I want to do what is good, but I don't.  I don't want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway."

Romans 7:21-25 [NLT] // "I have discovered this principle of life - that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. 22 I love God's law with all my heart. 23 But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind.  This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. 24 Oh, what a miserable person I am!  Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?  25 Thank God!  The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord."

Romans 8:1-2 [NLT] // "1 So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. 2 And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death."

2.  Healing from wounds

Wounds - "the choices others make"

Ephesians 4:26-27 [NLT] // And "don't sin by letting anger control you."  Don't let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

"If we don't let go of our past, we will never walk into our future."

3.  Authority over the enemy

1 Peter 5:8-9 [NLT] // Stay alert!  Watch out for your great enemy, the devil.  He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 9 Stand firm again him, and be strong in your faith.

Ephesians 6:10-12 // Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.  Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

THROUGH RELATIONSHIPS!

James 5:16 // Therefore confess your sin to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.

"Real life change happens in the context of authentic relationships."
